Contrapositive

for Solo Contrabass Clarinet

Instrumentation:

  • Solo Bb Contrabass Clarinet

Program Notes:

Contrapositive is a piece for Solo Contrabass Clarinet that is inspired by the
mathematical concept of contrapositive in relation to hypotheses and conclusions. The concept explains that compared to the conditional (original) statement, the contrapositive of a statement would switch the positioning of the hypothesis and conclusion, and negate them from their original. The way that I conveyed this in the music, is in the form and mode of the music. The form of the piece is:

A(major)-B(major)-B(minor)-A(minor)

In a sense, the second half of the form is like a mirror image of the first,
becoming minor, but also, switching what is heard first. This piece is a bit of an experiment, and is quite the long haul for the soloist, but when done correctly can showcase virtuosity and excitement.
