When I was contacted in early November of 2025 by pianist and friend Eunice Lam about the potential for a performance opportunity in December, I immediately was excited about the chance to write for such talent again. Beyond that however, I also was also touched by the opportunity to write for such an important concert for her, as this would be her second concert after coming back from an injury-related hiatus. In talks about what the piece should be about, I was only given the direction that it should be about this time of year, the holiday season – it is here that this piece, December is born.
December starts in a cold, contrapuntal style – it is somewhat lonely and spacious, occasionally grasping time but never for long. After somewhat short transitional material, a shimmering, but also slightly warm texture takes over showcasing the excitement of the season and the child-like joy that some experience during this time of year. Another transition then takes place, this time more chordal and full, until finally bringing us back to the cold and spacious mood of before. The piece ends with a few very soft, and warm moments of peace.
