duo

for Flute and Marimba

Instrumentation:

  • Flute
  • Marimba (soft yarn mallets throughout)

Program Notes:

The “Duo,” is set in five movements, they are as follows:

I. Breath – Tremolo music in the marimba, with linear flute lines above, it is serene and calm.

II. Lonely – The sighing of the flute contrasted with more active playing from the marimba. A spiral, spinning line in 7/8 depicts a sort of odd loneliness that gives way to the sighing from before.

III. Fire – A brief depiction of fire, with contrasting marimba lines, and very angular flute music.

IV. Dialogue – Here, the duo plays music back and forth that is of a casual, but slightly passionate nature, very peaceful and thoughtful music that acts as an excellent conversation piece between the two.

V. Coda (Breath II) – A short coda of music based around the first movement, the tremolo idea comes back into, and the linear flute playing comes back to the center stage.
