Program Notes:
Exotica is a piece that is meant to explore the many possible sounds that a
Trumpet can produce when under the influence of different types of mutes. The mutes explored in this piece are the straight mute, the cup mute, and the harmon mute. Each movement highlights a mute and what I believe it is “the best at” the first movement, “Harmon” highlights the odd noises that can be made when the stem of the mute is manipulated, or taken out, the second movement “Cup” uses the cup mute, a very nasal mute that I find works well with linear melodies, and very staccato attacks, and finally, the third movement “Straight” simply shows what a common mute can do to a very fast, energetic and wild melody.
