Five Contemplations

for Solo Clarinet

Instrumentation:

  • Solo Bb Clarinet

Program Notes:

One of my favorite things to explore in composition is the unaccompanied
soloist – there is something about it that is so interesting, it can be lonely and solemn, intimate, and singing, or even strong and bold. No matter what the music comes out to be, it is something I feel all composers must do at some point – write for the sole voice. Five Contemplations is my fourth piece for Unaccompanied Clarinet and is an exploration of the more serious side of unaccompanied music, all five of these movements are nomadic in nature in some sense – searching for the where the music should go and trying to find an answer to questions that are beyond the grasp of common thought.
