Program Notes:
In the Silence of the Secret Night, is one of my favorite compositions by the truly incredible composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. It is movement 3 of his piece Three Songs, for Voice and Piano. My history with this piece dates back to the spring of 2021, when I first heard Randall Hawes, the great trombonist, play his version of this piece. I then did a fair amount of searching to find a version with the lyrics, and ran across the incredible recording of Placido Domingo singing this song with The New York Studio Orchestra, arranged and conducted by Jonathan Tunick. Since that moment hearing the Placido Domingo version, I have always wanted to arrange this beautiful song for the Concert Band, giving wind players a chance to play some of the finest music out there.
