Program Notes:
This piece, Music for an Unwritten Film was my first composition for String
Quartet, and my first composition for strings in general. The music is heavily
inspired by the silent films of the early 20th century, particularly the films of
Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. Around the time of writing this in late 2021, I had just started a film history course in my senior year of high school, and the film that set me on the course to write this piece was Charlie Chaplin’s silent classic, The Kid. The music is heavily inspired by the music in that film, harmonically and rhythmically. It is my hope that this piece acts as a soundtrack to an unwritten silent film that has the beauty, comedy, and charm of Chaplin’s The Kid.
