Program Notes:
Music for Barton Fink is a 6-minute multi-movement piece
inspired by the 1991 Coen Brothers film titled “Barton Fink”. The piece
follows John Turturro’s character of the same name, who is a New York
playwright who goes to Hollywood to “write for the pictures” in the
early 1940s. What he doesn’t know is that what awaits him in Hollywood is a hellish world of doubt, and anxiety unlike any other he has seen before as a playwright. This suite of movements is inspired by various parts of the film, the first movement being inspired by Barton’s change in location from Broadway to Hollywood, the second being inspired by John Goodman’s light hearted character Charlie, who serves as someone to listen to Barton’s thoughts, the third being inspired by the script that Fink is working on that he just cannot get a hold of, and finally, the last movement is inspired by Barton’s Hotel being engulfed in flames, and the final scene of the movie in which Barton sits on the beach and sees a beautiful woman. It is my hope this music will be entertaining to those who play it, those who hear it, and those who enjoy the film itself.
