Program Notes:

Psalm for Concert Band is based off of the “Psalm,” movement from my
previous piece for Wind Quintet titled Suite. That movement is really the heart of that work, and it is immensely emotional, and personal. In extending and adapting the work for band, I knew that I had many more colors to work with, particularly in the Percussion, and I knew that I had a chance to expand the works emotional content, in that a more aggressive section could be added to combat the slow singing quality of the rest of the piece. The music starts with metallic sounds signifying a sort of meditation bell to bring a prayer to order, and from there, the Psalm is stated multiple times, and a short aggressive section portraying the anger of grief is played. It all ends as it began with the ringing of bells to signify the end of a moment of meditation, or prayer.
