If that doesn’t sum up this whole piece, then I don’t know what will! Romp
is an energetic output of joy. Meant to depict excitement and happiness through funky melodic ideas and a really interesting and quirky instrumentation. The sound of heavy low brass contrasted with Clarinet often speaking alone is meant to act as two children, or animals, playing around roughly and lightheartedly – with the product being joy and even further, fun. Though only around 3 1⁄2 minutes in length, the piece takes the listener from a simple beginning to a maddening middle section with lots of harmonic layers, to finally, the simplicity that once filled the music in the beginning.
