Program Notes:
Short n’ Suite, is a three-movement suite for Oboe and Piano that was
written because A) I had been wanting to use that title for quite some time now, and B) I had a hankering in me to write a piece for Oboe that shows off its many different qualities. While all together the piece should last around five minutes, each movement is short in terms of length – the first movement lasting about a minute and a half, the second being the longest and lasting around two minutes, and finally the third lasting around a minute and a half. The first movement shows off the quirky, mechanical side of the Oboe, featuring very angular lines with lots of different articulations, and extended techniques like tapping the keys, and trilling. The second movement shows off the beauty of the Oboe, in a sort of intimate interlude filled with linear lines of romantic tension. Finally, the last movement, Whirlwind, is all out chaos, showing off the agility of the Oboe and bringing a final splash of energy to the piece to close it out.
