for Solo Euphonium
Instrumentation:
- Solo Euphonium
Program Notes:
Soliloquies is a piece meant to showcase the many sides of the Euphonium
as a solo instrument. It is one of my favorite instruments and has always held a special place in musical heart – ever since hearing its great solo moments; like Whitacre’s October, or Mussorgsky’s Bydlo, from Pictures at an Exhibition – I have wanted to write a suite of characteristic movements to depict each side of this great instrument, like the lyrical, more intimate side, the sporadic and “in your face” side, and the more grand and majestic side. The Euphonium is able to move between these different moods so easily and with such grace, which cements its greatest as a solo instrument.
