One March evening, right around the turn of the seasons, I had some friends over to hang out. As they began to show up, a quick rainstorm flashed in, and in doing so, it washed the ground and cleared the sky of the day that preceded it. In this moment, I opened my screen door, and let the sound of the rain become the soundtrack for this little moment. I had taken a nap earlier in the day,
missing another quick rainstorm that happened then, and subsequently I also missed the rainbow that followed as well; I expressed my dismay at missing the rainbow in that moment, and it was at this point that my good friend Emma stated something along the general lines of:
“… there’ll be another rainbow.”
– These four words say a lot.
Through this piece, I try to capture the beauty of a rainbow, but also, the storm that precedes the rainbow. The music starts with the dripping and dropping of rain from the clouds above, and short moments of somewhat static calm that take us out of the soon to be constant rain. Once the storm comes in, the music is not the typical depiction of rain, rather, I tried to go for a sort of serene wash of sound as opposed to the typical, more harsh depiction of this weather event. However, a more abrasive ‘downpour’ section then take place that is a more typical to a depiction of rain. After this – the piece comes back to the rain drop idea as the storm dies away – and finally, we see our long-awaited rainbow.
