Ulterior Motifs is a show piece for Solo Bassoon that was written for a dear
friend of mine who played the Bassoon. The want to write this piece came out of wanting to write new music for the Solo Bassoon, but also wanting to write a piece for an extremely talented friend of mine, thus Ulterior Motifs was born. The music takes two simple motifs and builds on them rhythmically and harmonically throughout the span of about five and a half minutes. There are two main motifs, one in the first movement with the codename “D.S.” and another in the second movement with the codename “M.H.”. Both of these motifs are super short and catchy, and the embellishments on them are sure to give the soloist an exciting challenge and put the audience on a wild ride in which they are unsure of where these motifs may go next.
