Program Notes:
Admittedly, almost the entirety of the inspiration for this piece comes from a single item – a paint swatch from Lowes. The paint swatch in question provided the title, Wave Runner, and some of the ideas about the piece. The color itself is a cool teal that to me evokes many things. Not only do I see images of the sky in this color, but beyond that there is also an inviting nature to it that is somewhat subtle. It is not a warm color by any means, but the inviting nature, that could in some sense be seen as warm to a degree, inspired the “romantic,” as its marked, middle section of the work. To the first point; about the evocation of the sky, the work has a driving ostinato that represents a clear sky, and clear consciousness. The ostinato is transformed over the course of the entire work and is at times incredibly dense and at other times very palatial.
