for Two Baritone Saxophones
Instrumentation:
- Eb Baritone Saxophone 1
- Eb Baritone Saxophone 2
Program Notes:
The baritone saxophone was one of my first true loves of music. When I was in middle school, I started in my first year as a Viola player, and the next year made the big switch to saxophone, and within months was trusted to play the baritone sax after stupidly asking… “is it hard to read bass clef?” – the baritone sax is of course in treble clef. Anyway, ever since then, the instrument has held a soft spot in my heart, and particularly, when I first started playing it, I was attracted to the incredible high range that it has the ability to play in. As a student, it was difficult to get used to playing with strength in that range, but when it started to click for me… wow; it was a rush of adrenaline. All that listening to Gerry Mulligan had finally paid off!
Now, all these years later, this piece comes in. It highlights the high range of the baritone overall, but has its low moments as well of course. This piece acts as my tribute to the instrument that did so much for me as a young student, and continues to entertain me musically, whether it be jazz, classical, or even rock, the baritone sax is force to be reckoned with, and I hope that you will enjoying playing, or listening to this piece.
